Kaffenberger gratuliert Künstlerkolonie Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt zur Ernennung als Weltkulturerbestätte

Die Entscheidung des UNESCO-Welterbekomitees ist gefallen: Die Künstlerkolonie Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt wird in die UNESCO-Liste des Kultur- und Naturerbes der Welt aufgenommen.

Bijan Kaffenberger gratuliert der Künstlerkolonie Mathildenhöhe zu dieser besonderen Auszeichnung und würdigt die unablässige Arbeit, die hinter einer solchen Bewerbung als Welterbestätte steht.

„Die Anerkennung der Künstlerkolonie Mathildenhöhe als Kulturerbestätte zeigt, dass wir hier in Darmstadt ein unvergleichliches Kulturgut direkt im Zentrum haben. Die Künstlerkolonie beeindruckt nicht nur durch ihre Gebäude im Jugendstil, sie ist vielmehr auch Ausdruck der Arbeit und Vernetzung der damaligen Künstler, die allesamt eine Zukunftsvision vereinte. Es freut mich, dass das UNESCO-Welterbekomitee die Geschichte, die die Mathildenhöhe verkörpert, ebenso honoriert“, so Kaffenberger. 

Ende September 2020 hatte außerdem die Staatsministerin für Internationale Kulturpolitik im Auswärtigen Amt, Michelle Müntefering, auf Einladung von Bijan Kaffenberger, das UNESCO-Naturerbe Grube Messel sowie die Mathildenhöhe besucht.

„In Deutschland ist die Nähe des Naturwelterbes Grube Messel und des neuen Kulturwelterbes Künstlerkolonie Mathildenhöhe einmalig. Ich denke es wäre sinnvoll, dass die Stadt Darmstadt und der Landkreis Darmstadt-Dieburg ihr Welterbe gemeinsam touristisch vermarkten. Weltnatur- und Weltkultur so nah beieinander, das gibt es sonst nirgendwo“, so Kaffenberger.

Die Vorschläge zur Nominierung für die Welterbeliste werden von den zuständigen Länderbehörden über die Kultusministerkonferenz, das Auswärtige Amt und das UNESCO-Welterbezentrum dem UNESCO-Welterbekomitee zur Entscheidung vorgelegt. Die 44. Sitzung des UNESCO-Welterbekomitees findet vom 16. bis zum 31. Juli 2021 online statt. Das Komitee sollte bereits im Sommer 2020 in Fuzhou, China, tagen. Wegen der weltweiten Ausbreitung des Coronavirus war der Termin verschoben worden.
